Perhaps you’re new to freelancing, but already know that your personality is better suited for running your own business, as opposed to working for someone else. Or, maybe you have years of experience freelancing for others, and now you’d like to be the one in charge. Wherever you happen to be in your freelancing career, if your goal is to create your own business online, and you’re not sure where to begin, read on for a few ideas.
1. Share what you know. Are you the sort of person who’s always teaching people something new about your favorite topic? Is your educational background in something that you’ve since developed to the point where you’re now an expert? Could it be that you’ve already been a tutor or a teacher? If any of these questions resonate with you, then consider either starting your own tutoring business, or developing online courses for people to purchase on your website.
To get your name out there, you could even film short promos and post them to a YouTube, Vimeo, or Dailymotion channel dedicated to this specific purpose. You could also join a community like Quora, wherein you can build a reputation as an authority in your chosen field. Note, however, that directly marketing yourself within the answers you provide isn’t allowed, so instead, focus on providing a strong biography.
2. Be an inspiration. If you have a reputation for leadership, and helping the people in your life become optimal versions of themselves, then you might want to start an online mentoring business. Thanks to the many online conferencing options available, such as GoToMeeting, you can safely and effectively set up sessions. Another idea would be to follow those sessions up by directing clients to your website, which could feature corresponding ebooks or, like in tutoring or teaching, courses.
3. Create content for different media outlets. Although this could mean content in the form of videos, photography, or even writing for various businesses, it could actually mean so much more than that. For example, do you have a great speaking or singing voice? Then a voiceover business might be just the thing for you. If you already have professional recording equipment and previous experience, that’s all the better! Platforms such as Voices.com might be good promotional starting points.
Don’t forget, music is an important part of media creation, too! If you’re a musician/composer, have you thought about providing instrumentals for commercials, documentaries, etc.? In addition to YouTube, you might want to promote yourself via places like SoundCloud, or even apply for a gig through Audio Network.
4. Provide an online marketplace. The Internet is filled with different sort of marketplaces, selling everything from event invitations to earrings. Many particularly entrepreneurial and/or artsy people look to sites like eBay or Etsy for selling their products. The competition is high amongst those sorts of places, so, if you’re especially tech-savvy, why not provide an alternative by creating your own commission or paid membership-based online marketplace for a specific niche?
5. Manage social media accounts for businesses. If you have an eye for detail, can multitask, and preferably have experience in digital marketing, then consider starting your own online business that strictly deals with posting and moderating social media content.
