Create a Decadent Dessert with This Hot Fudge Sundae Cake Recipe

Simple to make and delicious to taste, this hot fudge sundae cake recipe is sure to satisfy chocolate cravings!

Note: this recipe is adapted from one found in the cookbook, America’s Best Recipes: A 1988 Hometown Collection.


  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ cup of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of chopped pecans (optional)
  • 1 cup of firmly packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup of cocoa
  • 1 ¾ cups of hot water
  • Vanilla ice cream


  1. Combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, tablespoons of cocoa, baking powder, and salt in an ungreased 9-inch square pan.
  2. Add the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture.
  3. Stir in the (optional) pecans.
  4. Sprinkle the overall mixture with brown sugar and the ¼ cup of cocoa.
  5. Pour hot water over the hot fudge sundae cake batter.
  6. Bake the batter for about 40 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes, then serve on dishes with vanilla ice cream.
